The gangster hats, as shown above, were previously in the possession of Jackie Friedman; founder and owner of the famous Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Friedman was personal friends with many entertainers and celebrities from around the world. Among those notable people were Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop but also friends considered to be part of the various “families” of organized crime, also known as the Mafia.
All six of these hats were given by the owner to Friedman, who kept them on a shelf in his office. Upon his death none of these items were wanted by his family and were to thrown away. Harry Goldstein, his personal assistant, kept the hats in storage until they were sold to finally end up in the HEADS OF THE FAMILY collection.
Pictured are the hats from the crime bosses Meyer Lansky, Vito Genovese, Joseph Bonanno (below- from left to right), Carlo Gambino, Joseph Colombo and Charles “Lucky” Luciano (above- from left to right).
